  • Don't forget to number the pages of your report as well as all illustrative material you include. Make a table of contents and images to make sure everything is properly identified.
  • A full rough draft can only be seen by the teacher once!
  • Rough draft should include student IA checklist
  • You should show excellent research skills by citing all the sources in MLA format, making proper use of footnotes, etc. 
  • You work but be put through Turn It In before submission (ideally at the final draft stage)

IA checklist 

Crit. A

  •  Well focused Research question
  •  Detailed and accurate explanation of geographic context
  •  Relation to the syllabus topic is pointed out
  •  A good locational map is presented (A good map has: title, key, scale, orientation and grid reference)

Crit. B

  •  Clear description of methods
  •  Clear justification of methods
  •  The suitability of the methods to answer the research question is pointed out

Crit. C

  •  Information collected is directly relevant to the research question
  •  Information collected is sufficient in quantity to allow for in-depth analysis
  •  Information collected is sufficient in quality to allow for in-depth analysis 
  •  The most appropriate techniques (graphs/images) are used for treatment and display of information collected

Crit. D

  • Report reveals good level of knowledge and understanding (geographic theory and vocabulary are present)
  •  Analysis of results is clear, well-reasoned and detailed
  •  Analysis makes strong reference to research question
  •  Analysis makes strong reference to geographic context
  •  Analysis makes strong reference to information collected
  •  Analysis makes strong reference to illustrative material
  •  Anomalies are explained

Crit. E

  •  Conclusion is clear
  •  Conclusion is consistent with the analysis

Crit. F

  •  Methods for collecting data have been evaluated clearly
  •  There are valid recommendations for improvement
  •  There are valid recommendations for extensions
  •  There are suggestions for possible modifications of the research question

Overall presentation

  •  Work is within 2500 words
  •  Overall presentation is neat and structured
  •  Pages are numbered
  •  References follow standard convention (MLA)
  •  All illustrative material is numbered
  •  All illustrative material is fully integrated into the body of the report
  •  All material (e.g. data collection forms and/or statistical calculations) included in the appendix are clearly labelled and numbered and referred to in the body of your text

Different writing styles

Criteria A and B should be written in a descriptive manner, criterion D should be analytical, E evaluative and F reflective.
